Let’s talk logo!

This is one of my latest works: a logo design for a new type of football, played in a closed filed.

I was asked to deliver it in a couple of days, due to some heavy deadlines, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t walk through the whole path. On the first day I wrote down ideas (unfortunately my scanner is…actually I don’t own a scanner – I use the work one – so I can’t upload the brainstorm page) and focused on the ones that fitted best: speed, football, agility, impacts, quickness… Then I went through the font choice, and picked up  a bold one, to convey the idea of a powerful product; in the end I chose to mix name and logo because – though a font-less logo has been created too – I felt that the name and the logo had to work together, for a better understanding.

Active colours were a natural choice, to carry the idea of a restless game

Explain with style!

I’m quite astonished by the increasing of contacts- this blog had an amazing 400% contact more agains its normal number, so I want you to keep on following, tempting you with this simple idea. I must confess that the number we are talking about are really hilarious: normally rpm10’s blog have 2-3 contacts… 😀

Ok…Picture this: you had your project done, the Client really enjoyed your work…now wrap it up in the right way! There’s a big difference between a present in a rugged newspaper sheet and a nice box with shiny wrap-up,  paper; the same for your works: you have to show them in a proper manner.

Here is where style guides come into help; a style guide is a document – from a couple of sheets up to regular book long – where designer/s describe how the logo have to be used.  Yes, you must explain how your idea has to be used: it sounds weird but it is so.

You can handle this task with a couple of minutes – if you prepare a template! – or weeks, depending on your Client needs or your will; here is a sample of one of my first StyleGuides

This first page is about the logo itslef – it lacks of measurements, spacing and postion hints, some may say, and the may be correct…It depends on you – and your Client!
Just remember to be consistent throughout your document with layout and background, so that you will not be confusing.

new start

Ok…

This blog has had a new start, and, to stick with my promise, I want to share my experience in changing my life, starting with my job; don’t expect too much – I’m not a pro, and right now I don’t want to. I just want to take back the control of my time…

So you want to be a graphic designer, is it? Good! But why? I mean, if you can focus on your motivation, then you have the answer… Graphics is about creativity, imagination, freedom of choices, inspiration but also technologies and tecniques, strictness, deadlines… Got it?

Each problem has – at least – two sides: choose the one you like the most and come along with the other.

On this very first post about starting our first steps in graphic design world, I suggest you a couple of links

New blog use

I’m slowly shaping a new kind of life, and I want to share with you my change: I’m getting more and more involved in Graphic Design – though I’m quite old to do it! – and my idea is to share with everyone trapped like me in a job that doesn’t let them breathe, all my steps through the fog of metamorphosis from stern (!) technical draughtman to loose graphic designer.
I hope you stick with me for a long time to come!
